This statement by Satoshi Nakamoto addresses fundamental issues with traditional monetary systems, particularly those based on fiat currency.
The root problem with conventional currency, especially fiat money (which isn’t backed by a physical commodity like gold but by government decree), relies heavily on trust in multiple layers of the financial system: trust in government and central banks to manage the currency responsibly, including controlling inflation, maintaining economic stability, and ensuring the currency’s value over time.
All the trust that’s required to make it work emphasizes how trust is not just a component but the very foundation of traditional currency systems—trust in financial institutions to hold and return money, trust in economic policy, and trust in international exchange rates remaining stable or predictable.
The central bank must be trusted not to debase the currency. Debasement refers to actions that reduce the value of money, often through inflation or by increasing the money supply beyond what’s sustainable—printing more money to finance spending, or lowering interest rates in ways that expand supply without matching growth.
But the history of fiat currencies is full of breaches of that trust: hyperinflation in places like Venezuela, Argentina, Zimbabwe, and Weimar Germany; intentional or accidental currency devaluation that erodes purchasing power; and financial crises where trust in systems collapses.
The underlying message is that Bitcoin was designed to address this trust issue by creating a currency system where trust is not in human institutions but in transparent, immutable code and verifiable cryptographic proof—through decentralization, a fixed supply, and a public ledger anyone can verify.
